There are various types of aerators used in China, but impeller aerators are the most commonly used in pond aquaculture. This is due to their multiple functions, including water circulation, aeration, mixing, and oxygenation. They are particularly well-suited for managing water quality in still-water ponds and offer a relatively high oxygen transfer efficiency.
Impeller aerators come in different shapes and sizes, but they generally consist of a motor, speed reducer, support frame, impeller, and buoy. These devices perform several key tasks simultaneously during operation. When activated, the impeller draws in oxygen-depleted water from below and expels it back into the pond, transforming stagnant water into flowing water. The blades and agitating pipe stir the water underneath the impeller, creating surface waves that form an air-wrapped curtain. This process increases the air-water contact area, reduces the gas-liquid boundary layer, and accelerates the dissolution of oxygen into the water.
In addition to oxygenating the water, the aeration process also helps remove harmful gases such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methane, and sulfur dioxide by desorbing them into the atmosphere. As the impeller rotates, it creates a negative pressure behind the water mixing pipe, drawing air into the system through the water pipe and immediately breaking it into micro-bubbles. These bubbles then enter the impeller's pressure zone, further enhancing the oxygenation process.
As the lower layers of water are continuously lifted and mixed with surface water, the surface water is constantly refreshed. This vertical mixing improves the distribution of dissolved oxygen throughout the pond, breaking the uniformity and maximizing the oxygenation effect for aquatic life.
